In a move to streamline the process for residents looking to update their information, the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security has announced new guidelines for changing names on driver’s licenses in the state.
Starting next month, individuals seeking to update their name on their driver’s license will no longer have to provide a marriage certificate or court order as proof of their name change. Instead, they will be able to simply present their social security card with their new name.
This updated process is being implemented in an effort to make it easier for individuals to update their information and ensure that their driver’s license reflects their current legal name. It is also expected to reduce wait times at DMV locations across the state.
“We understand that changing your name can be a hassle, and we want to make this process as smooth and efficient as possible for our residents,” said Department of Safety and Homeland Security spokesperson, Sarah Johnson. “By accepting a social security card as proof of a name change, we hope to simplify the process and eliminate unnecessary paperwork.”
Residents looking to update their name on their driver’s license will need to visit their local DMV office and bring their current driver’s license, social security card with their new name, and proof of Tennessee residency. The process can be completed on the spot, with individuals receiving a new driver’s license with their updated name before they leave the office.
“I think this new process is a great idea,” said Nashville resident, Jennifer Smith. “I recently got married and had to go through the whole process of changing my name on all my legal documents. It was a lot of work, so I’m glad to hear that it will be easier for others in the future.”
The Department of Safety and Homeland Security is also reminding residents that they have 30 days from the official name change to update their driver’s license. Failure to do so could result in fines or penalties.
“We want to make sure that everyone is in compliance with the law and that their information is up to date,” said Johnson. “It’s important for residents to take the necessary steps to update their driver’s license as soon as possible after a name change.”
